Proof of Ownership for Owner Surrender
At From the Ashes Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation, we require proof of ownership to ensure the ethical and legal transfer of equines into our care. Proof of ownership helps protect both the equine and the individuals involved in the surrender process. Below is a list of acceptable forms of documentation and why they are important.
Acceptable Proof of Ownership Documents
You must provide at least one of the following documents:
Bill of Sale
A document showing the transfer of ownership to you.
Must include the seller's and buyer's names, horse’s details, and date of sale.
Registration Papers
If the equine is registered with a breed association, the original registration papers with your name listed as the owner.
Signed transfer forms, if applicable, are also acceptable.
Adoption Contract
If you adopted the equine from a rescue or organization, a signed contract stating you are the current owner.
Veterinary or Farrier Records
Medical or farrier service records in your name showing consistent care for the equine.
Boarding Contracts or Stable Records
Documentation from a boarding facility confirming the horse is under your care.
Coggins Certificate or Health Certificate
Official documents with your name as the owner.
Why is Proof of Ownership Required?
Preventing Unauthorized Surrenders: To ensure the equine is being surrendered by the rightful owner or someone with proper authorization.
Supporting Ethical Care: To maintain transparency and fairness during the surrender process.
Legal Compliance: To protect all parties from potential disputes over ownership or liability.
What if I Don’t Have Proof of Ownership?
If you do not have traditional documents, we still want to help. Please contact us to discuss your situation. In some cases, we may request:
Signed affidavits or witness statements from a veterinarian, farrier, or boarding facility confirming your ownership.
Photos of the equine and any distinguishing markings along with a written explanation of your ownership history.
How to Submit Proof of Ownership
